06id124 - INDONESIA Father Ferdinando (right), a Franciscan priest from Ravenna, Italy, has been pastorat the Catholic church in Banda Aceh for 16 years, and here talks to the engineer involved with repairing tsunami damage to his church. Photograph taken in Banda Aceh, mid-December 2006, 2 years after the Tsunami of December 26th 2004 devastated much of the coastal region. Taken to illustrate reconstruction work and projects of CRS (Catholic Relief Services) of USA who sponsored the photo tour. Father Ferdinando’s testimony after surviving the tsunami: "I was in Meulaboh on the 25th of December 2004, then on the morning of the 26th, at 8 a.m. I was standing at the bus station waiting to return to Banda when the earthquake struck. I stood in the road as it cracked up and it was very frightening. Along with many other people I ran to the roof of the mosque nearby to shelter from the waves. In half an hour it reached 4 meters. We saw the corpses of women and children float by. After 4 hours the water started to go down, and we were able to walk to high ground. I stayed 4 days in Meulaboh as it was not possible to return to Banda. My friends in Banda were so worried about me, they assumed the worst, and a secular priest there had already said the last rites for me! Then I turned up back in Banda - Praise the Lord! All the columns of my church were cracked and had to be repaired".
