INDONESIA Shopkeeper. Photograph taken in Meulaboh, Aceh Province mid-December 2006, 2 years after the Tsunami of December 26th 2004 devastated much of the coastal region. Taken to illustrate reconstruction work and projects of CRS (Catholic Relief Services) of USA who sponsored the photo tour. Susilla’s testimony: "We started with the main central building with offices, and then added the market blocks on two sides, as well as offices for the bus companies. It took only 7 months to build the whole thing. The engineers and a few skilled workers were brought in from outside the province, either from Medan or Sumatra, while all the labourers are local. The pay rate varies from 35, 000 rupiahs per day for unskilled labour, up to 50, 000 per day for those more skilled. Having completed this project, I am now involved in house building. CRS work involves two main branches: infrastructure and shelter. Now that most of the infrastructure is in place, we are concentrating on shelter." stock photo
