INDONESIA 70-year-old Hasana a TSUNAMI survivo lives with 4-year-old grand daughter Aniah Nabila, who still suffers severe trauma from the experience and having lost her parents. Photograph taken in Aceh Province mid-December 2006, 2 years after the Tsunami of December 26th 2004 devastated much of the coastal region. Taken to illustrate reconstruction work and projects of CRS (Catholic Relief Services) of USA who sponsored the photo tour. Hasana’s testimony: "I was selling vegetables in the market at the time of the Tsunami, and ran to the nearby mosque to shelter. I lost my daughter and older grandson. Anisah is the only grandchild who survived. She was found floating in water and was brought back to the village. We have already been 3 months in this (CRS) house, and it is comfortable. We have a shallow well, but the water is not really good. Drinking water gets delivered to the community by truck, for now."

Fitriah’s testimony: "The water rushed in from 7 km away, coming from two sides and hitting us with a clapping motion. It was devastating. I was in the volleyball court at the time. I have no idea how I survived. It was like a dream. I dont know how long I was under water. I was holding on to my daughters T-shirt. I still get afraid whenever I hear a strong wind or feel an earth tremor. The Tsunami sounded like an airplane, plus the sound of people screaming!" stock photo

#06id092 - INDONESIA Laboratroy for testing drinking water. Photograph taken in Meulaboh, Aceh Province mid-December 2006, 2 years after the Tsunami of December 26th 2004 devastated much of the coastal region. Taken to illustrate reconstruction work and projects of CRS (Catholic Relief Services) of USA who sponsored the photo tour. The lab terchnician explains: "Every house well gets tested. UNICEF originally helped set up the lab to support other NGOs in the area, and now CRS helps pay staff salaries and provides us with equipment. The lab coordinates its activities with the local government. The water in local wells is quite contaminated, especially with Arsenic, as well as Nitrates, Nitrites, Iron, Manganese and Fluoride. The water became salinated after the Tsunami. We test here both the water from shallow and deep wells."
