Disaster
INDONESIA Nur Hassana (right) with husband and son, Tsunami survivors of Kampong Belakang Panggong, a low lying village beside the sea in Meulaboh, in their temporary housing. Photograph taken in Meulaboh, Aceh Province mid-December 2006, 2 years after the Tsunami of December 26th 2004 devastated much of the coastal region. Taken to illustrate reconstruction work and projects of CRS (Catholic Relief Services) of USA who sponsored the photo tour. Nur’s testimony: "We have been in this house 2 months now. Before that we lived in tents, where the going was pretty grim. We were drinking coffee when the earthquake came, and didnt know that the Tsunami would follow. My husband came from the beach and said that the sea was dry - it had retreated - and that maybe there would be a big wave coming. So we ran to shelter in the mosque just up the street. Then the wave came and hit. We lost both our sets of parents and some nephews. We are quite happy living in this temporary house for now, it is so much better than a tent! We are waiting for the keys to our new house which will be built by CRS. We must be patient."
