I ran off with my wife, two children and their grandmother. We made it to higher ground and survived. But I lost my brother, aged 18, who lived with us. We stayed for the first month at the local government office, camped with many other villagers. Then we stayed a while in an army barracks. Conditions were very rough. Then we put together a wooden shack where we stayed for over a year. Now we have a nice new house provided by CRS, and a shallow well for water."

It took only 7 months to build the whole thing. The engineers and a few skilled workers were brought in from outside the province, either from Medan or Sumatra, while all the labourers are local. The pay rate varies from 35, 000 rupiahs per day for unskilled labour, up to 50, 000 per day for those more skilled. Having completed this project, I am now involved in house building. CRS work involves two main branches: infrastructure and shelter. Now that most of the infrastructure is in place, we are concentrating on shelter."

INDONESIA Ronald Safinaldy is one of the beneficiaries of a new house, where he lives with his mother Rosmiati, his wife and children. Photograph taken in Meulaboh, Aceh Province mid-December 2006, 2 years after the Tsunami of December 26th 2004 devastated much of the coastal region. Taken to illustrate reconstruction work and projects of CRS (Catholic Relief Services) of USA who sponsored the photo tour. Ronald’s testimony: "We have been 5 months in our new home. Before that we lived in tents, since the Tsunami wiped away our old home. When the Tsunami struck I was working in the fish market . At first we felt the earthquake, then the water flooded in and we sheltered on the roof of the nearby mosque. CRS has served us well, providing water from 2 sources. We get our drinking water through pipes from a bore hole, and our water for bathing comes from shallow wells which they have dug for us."
