Father Ferdinando's testimony after surviving the tsunami: "I was in Meulaboh on the 25th of December 2004, then on the morning of the 26th, at 8 a.m. I was standing at the bus station waiting to return to Banda when the earthquake struck. I stood in the road as it cracked up and it was very frightening. Along with many other people I ran to the roof of the mosque nearby to shelter from the waves. In half an hour it reached 4 meters. We saw the corpses of women and children float by. After 4 hours the water started to go down, and we were able to walk to high ground. I stayed 4 days in Meulaboh as it was not possible to return to Banda. My friends in Banda were so worried about me, they assumed the worst, and a secular priest there had already said the last rites for me! Then I turned up back in Banda - Praise the Lord! All the columns of my church were cracked and had to be repaired". It took only 7 months to build the whole thing. The engineers and a few skilled workers were brought in from outside the province, either from Medan or Sumatra, while all the labourers are local. The pay rate varies from 35, 000 rupiahs per day for unskilled labour, up to 50, 000 per day for those more skilled. Having completed this project, I am now involved in house building. CRS work involves two main branches: infrastructure and shelter. All the columns of my church were cracked and had to be repaired". http://www.spraguephoto.com/imageresponse.lasso?id=15541 06id143 - INDONESIA Muslim girls at kindergarten in Banda Aceh which lost many of its children to the tsunami, and has now been rebuilt. Then we heard a sound like 1000 trucks and saw the water rushing towards us. We all ran, holding hands, and there was chaos everywhere. People all ran different ways, as the water caught up to us and rushed over our backs. We were washed along to a wall, where we managed to climb onto a roof from where we saw the sea carrying trees, whole houses and dead people along. Many cried for help but there was nothing we could do. After half an hour we found my mother and father safe, but we couldnt return to our house because of all the debris. We went to a hill nearby and stayed a month there with other victims. At first I thought Id never return to the village, out of fear. I cried every day afterwards for a long time.
