The file on children is the result of working many years as a freelance
photographer for
UNICEF and
Save the Children Fund, as well as several
other aid agencies which work with children and their families in
developing countries.
Children are charming and easy to photograph, but images of
playful kids
with big smiles display only one side of the reality. Life can be hard
for young people in poor countries, and often they are involved in
child labor,
working long hours in dangerous or unhealthy situations. Even
worse is the plight of those unfortunate children who get caught up in
trafficking and prostitution, as well as those who are forced to serve
in armies and fight, such as in
Uganda and
Sudan. Other children have
witnessed
war and intense violence at
the hands of paramilitaries in their communities.
We present here an archive covering both the joys as well as the sorrows
of being a child in today's crazy world.
